Writing Multicultural Steampunk for a Young Adult Audience

July 30, 2011

If you watch a group of children play together, they are what they are. They don’t care what other kids look like, as long as they are all engaged in the game. When writing for a YA audience, keeping them engaged is the key. Steampunk is a great genre for YA readers. By its very nature it is filled with adventure, fantastic inventions, and strange mysteries. The YA audience loves this sort of story: witness the popularity of the Foglios’ Girl Genius series. If those stories, however, were all limited to a Eurocentric view and characters, or to cowboys...

The Hand of Fate

A gunshot shattered the silence of the night, followed by the bloodthirsty cries of the mob on her heels. Maria Chen heard her pulse pounding in her head in near-perfect time to the crash-crash-crashing of the mob  through the dense. Scrambling over rocks she could not feel, running through brush that tore at her legs and her silk clothes, panic overwhelming her.  She cleared the first ridge, slipping and sliding to the gully on the opposite side, and ran along the water course, the cold water splashing against her insensate legs.  The cold would not stop her, not with her...

Aeryn Daring and the Scientific Detective: A Serial Novel, Chapter One

“It’s Icarus whom everyone remembers. But it was Daedalus who built the wings and escaped.” ~Aeryn Daring I Lady Aeryn Foxxe-Grace Tallhat, in which we meet our unlikely hero, a man with a pointy beard, a curly-haired boy, and a fine example of Pteropus frislandia “Damnation!” exclaimed Aeryn. It wasn’t something she would have been able to say at home—in her father’s house, that is—but when she was Aeryn Daring she could say whatever she pleased, and even Lord Tallhat wouldn’t dare speak against her. It was early May, in the year 1903, in the city of Darwin. Not,...

The Night Watchman Express

1 – The Intruders’ Arrival Miriam, who was hiding under the settee in the large drawing room, looked up from the story she was reading. Furnace, the butler, was talking to the cook outside the door. “…and their room must be the largest bedchamber in the house, and it must face due South. They said that was very important.” “The largest room?” That was Mrs. Williams. Something serious was going on, then, if she had left her kitchen. “That could only mean-…” “The master’s room. I’m aware of that, Mrs. Williams,” Furnace replied calmly. Miriam put down the heavy...

Steamsteel, Chapter One: The Brother and The Blueprints

Liza Johnson could not stand the presence of gentlemen for more than a few minutes.  Men were all right, she was rather fond of those, but gentlemen would find her last nerve and play it like a badly-tuned violin.  After her parents’ deaths, the increasing number of suitors that appeared on her doorstep was creating an orchestra that threatened to drive Liza mad.  She presently found herself trying to show her current suitor the quickest way to the door.  The fact they were on a second-story balcony didn’t register as a real problem to her. He looks like a...

July 28, 2011
By

Attendees at the 2011 Comic-Con in San Diego got a preview of the new Nickelodeon TV series The Last Airbender: Legend of Korra, sequel to the wildly popular Avatar: The Last Airbender. A new trailer is below, and media including The Escapist and ScreenRant are commenting on its relation to the original series. Take a look and see for yourself. Beyond the simple fact that the visuals are incredible, and of course we love the Steampunk aspects, having Avatar: The Last Airbender series creators Bryan Konietzk and Michael DiMartino at the helm of this sequel is comforting. And here’s...

Steampunk Projects on Kickstarter

July 25, 2011
By

This originally appeared at STEAMED! Got swag?  I’m running a contest over at my other blog. Now, back to today’s post. Kickstarter. All the cool kids seem to be doing it.  It’s a grass-roots project incubator allowing the average person to seek investors for projects.  Investors usually get some sort of limited edition goodies for contributing towards the project’s goal. There’s some neat steampunk projects going on right now. This is just a sampling… Steampunk: History Beyond Imagination is a museum exhibit slated to open in October at Muzeo in Anaheim, CA. The exhibit will introduce visitors to an...

The Peculiar Pretzelmen in Concert

M. Incroyable performs. Picture by Maria Brown

There is some challenge to writing about The Peculiar Pretzelmen; this band, after all, defies description.  They’re dark, gritty, and raw, which means listening with an open mind and appreciating the vision in their unusual musicality. It makes sense, then, that my first live experience with the band is taking place on a rainy and dramatic June evening in Fresno, California at Audie’s Olympic in the historic Tower District. On their first visit to Fresno, the Los Angeles-based group is in the midst of their By Any Means Necessary tour, and they plan to spend the next several months touring the West...

The Con Report: MARCon 2011

This year, MARCon (Multiple Alternate Realities Convention) held in Columbus, Ohio, celebrated its 46th birthday – and eleventh on Memorial Day weekend. MARCon’s theme changes every year, and this year’s theme was Alternate Histories, making MARCon an excellent choice for local steampunks looking to show off their gear. One of the major highlights of the convention was the appearance of The Extraordinary Contraptions, a steampunk band out of Georgia. Despite a programming SNAFU that nearly prevented them from having a stage or a PA system, the band put on several excellent shows. Friday night’s performance began with only a...

Comicpalooza 2011

Houston, Tx. George R. Brown Convention Center. This is Comicpalooza’s 3rd year running and their eyes were bigger than their stomachs. The size of the convention space was massive, spanning six blocks of space. The location was daunting to attendees and exhausting to panelist and vendors as they trekked long stretches to get from one place to another. This was the first sign of a poorly planned event. Dealers, artists and fan groups were all placed at the farthest end of the convention space.  Between the sponsored hotel and vendors were panels, check in, then a huge exhibition hall...

8 A Steampunk Anthology

8 A Steampunk Anthology

My name is Theresa.  I am a graphic novel junkie.  There, I said it and I’m not ashamed.  When my editor asked me to interview Samuel E. Kirkman Jr., a collaborator for “8 A Steampunk Anthology,” I jumped up and down and did my happy dance. Thankfully, my editor was spared the full sight of it. So I loaded up the trailer, right?  Oh my gears and garters, was it awesome! As I watched the pages go by, I had a great deal more questions than “What is Steampunk” for Samuel. Looking at what he helped to create gave...
