The Gatehouse Gazette Surfaces in an All New Format!

May 7, 2012
By

The Gatehouse Gazette, an online and print version magazine, presented a great variety of writers and information about Dieselpunk and Steampunk culture during it’s most critical growth and expansion into modern awareness.  In fact, they helped organize and promote the “Great Steampunk debate” in the Spring of 2010 that helped define the subculture as well as setting standards for more than one mainline approach to Dieselpunk. The two main streams of Dieselpunk are now often referred to by terms referencing the name of the Chief Editor of the Gazette, Nick Ottens,  and to the name of another prime contributor...

BB Blackdog on Tour in Steampunk Land

Left to Right – John, Dale and Axel of BBB I recently had the privilege of meeting the members of a really interesting, bluesy, and soulful band called BB Blackdog at the new Steampmunk and Paranormal Convention, “The Nightmare Machine,” presented by the Steampunk Illumination Society of Texas.  The band members include:  Axel Boldt, on Drums, John Ferguson, Rhythm Bass, and Dale Rowles, Lead Bass and Vocals. That’s right, both guitarists like bass, so they simply don’t use a guitar in this band. Believe  me, it works well for them! With two bass guitars covering a higher and...

Capital effort, Ladies and Gentlemen!

April 6, 2012
By

Within the past two months, a handful of Steampunk projects have ventured forth to secure funding and each has found its needs met through the micro-lending opportunities presented by Kickstarter and Crowdfunder. Doctor Fantastique’s Show of Wonders is no stranger to the world of micro-finance. Through our readership’s kindness and generosity, we were able to move the fourth issue of our print edition to a traditional offset press rather than POD, and for that we are both grateful and honored to have such a devoted readership. We’re certain Professor Elemental, the crew of the S.S. Beatrix, and Airship Ambassador...

Massive Sci-Fi/Fantasy History Project

April 2, 2012
By

It hardly needs to be said that Kickstarter and Crowdfunding have done wonders for the Steampunk community. Here is a project that touches not just upon our expanding corner of the universe but the whole of Science Fiction and Fantasy. Throughout his life,  Charles N. Brown (1937-2009), Locus Magazine’s founder, collected books, stories, photographs, interviews and reviews, and artifacts from sci-fi and fantasy conventions (which he began attending in his teens!) All of this material, including magazine archives, is now stored and in need of preservation. Digitizing the archives is the primary goal of this project, and future projects...

The Sound Lord Clarke

April 2, 2012
By

THE SOUND LORD CLARKE by H.Y. Hill The first time I met Lord Clarke was in the spring of 1878, four years before the event known as ‘The Silence.’ I met him at his workshop on Gayfere Street in London. Lord Clarke was a man in his mid-fifties. His hair was short and white as was his beard and moustache. He was a pale man who looked like he had never seen the sun in years. Heavy wrinkles plagued his face. Lord Clarke was the son of another Lord Clarke. He inherited his father’s seat in the House of...

But this year, Mother Nature will not...

A Pirate’s Pettifog on Proposition and Propriety

March 12, 2012
By

Good Captain,   Is not a true and certain thing that a gentleman always lays down covering fire while the lady is reloading? The only exception to this should be in cases of extreme emergency. What are your thoughts on this matter?   Sincerely, Reverend Caleb Gabriel Thorne     Dear Reverend,   Indeed, while she is reloadin’ ye should be layin’ down coverin’ fire thick as a dreadnought’s broadside. However, if ye truly want to make a good impression, lend her one of yer own pieces till things calm enough that ye can reload in peace and calm. Ye...

The Age of Steam Begins with Dead Iron

The Age of Steam Begins with Dead Iron

Dead Iron by Devon Monk is a Steampunk look at civilization in its purest form of industrialization. It is an examination of conflicting supernatural entities during a simpler time in the west when good folk believe in the American dreams and fear that which they do not understand. Dead Iron is a character driven adventure where the innocent believe in hope and the mystic believe in power. Cedar Hunt is a werewolf. He makes a living as a tracker for hire. An obvious choice given his canine abilities along with the intuitive skills he has gained over the years...
