Genevieve Yang of Psyche Corps Grants an Interview

Here at The Art of Steampunk (aka S.S. Kali’s Hourglass), we try hard to ally with others that want to share good fun and creative art in all its forms.  We also tend to really like art that leans toward Sci-Fi or what the Lotus Comic staff define as “Nerdy” vs “Geeky.”   Along that line, I would like to bring your attention to a singer, storyteller, comedian, and drop dead gorgeous performer that does Cyberpunk/Darkwave type performances with one of the finest voices in the industry, yet using such bizarre items as a percussion track based on the DNA...

BB Blackdog on Tour in Steampunk Land

Left to Right – John, Dale and Axel of BBB I recently had the privilege of meeting the members of a really interesting, bluesy, and soulful band called BB Blackdog at the new Steampmunk and Paranormal Convention, “The Nightmare Machine,” presented by the Steampunk Illumination Society of Texas.  The band members include:  Axel Boldt, on Drums, John Ferguson, Rhythm Bass, and Dale Rowles, Lead Bass and Vocals. That’s right, both guitarists like bass, so they simply don’t use a guitar in this band. Believe  me, it works well for them! With two bass guitars covering a higher and...

BarrelBright: The New West

March 5, 2012

(Author’s note: I owe these fine people an apology for how overdue this is. Life gets hectic, and before you know it, you are struggling just to stay aloft. But, no excuse, I’m late, and I’m sorry, guys.) Tonight I had the privilege to sit down (virtually) with James Dean of the Wichita band BarrelBright. For those of you who don’t know, BarrelBright uses a post apocalyptic Dustpunk theme, and they have been melting faces with an amazing rock show in five states, fifteen cities, and have sold albums in 8 countries. On their own, they own the stage,...

Skull and Trombones: Music Piracy’s Effects on the Independent Musician, Part 2

By Mark Rossmore Photos used with permission (Credit: Mark Rossmore & DragonCon) Swimming Around a Tsunami What are steampunk musicians doing to stem piracy? Are they “pulling a Metallica” and sowing rabid discontent amongst their fans? Hardly! They’re doing quite the opposite. “We have built our business model on trying to avert, not fight piracy,” Deadly Nightshade’s Hazelton said. “We offer people who buy our stuff a lot of perks and provide the best customer experience we possibly can—and that’s easy since we’re an independent project. We can bend over backwards, refund or give away for free anything we want....

Skull and Trombones: Music Piracy’s Effects on the Independent Musician, Part 1

By Mark Rossmore “If torrenting was called ‘mooching’ instead of ‘piracy’ I think less people would do it. I mean, Jesus, pirates are COOL.” - Caustic, Industrial Musician Real-life sea pirates were nothing like the dashing anti-heroes we see in the movies. There were few swashbuckling rogues amid the ranks of seaborne murderers and thieves. So, let’s not sugarcoat things. Illegally downloading music is theft. It’s a crime. Putting aside intellectual property and copyright violations, perhaps its greatest offense is the devaluation of an artist’s hard work. This “mooching” has been in the news quite a bit due to...

Music Video: Psyche Corp.’s “Oh”

September 7, 2011

Psyche Corporation is easily one of the more popular bands on the Steampunk performance circuit. The group, led by Genevieve Yang, has performed at the Steampunk World’s Fair, the Canadian National Steampunk Exhibition, TempleCon, Wicked Faire, and enough other places to easily makes one’s head spin. So you can imagine my surprise when I found an email from the talented Genevieve with their brand-new video “Oh.” This latest video from Psyche Corporation was produced after a Kickstarter campaign designed to turn this into a much slicker music video than had been produced before. Let me tell you, this is...

The Peculiar Pretzelmen in Concert

M. Incroyable performs. Picture by Maria Brown

There is some challenge to writing about The Peculiar Pretzelmen; this band, after all, defies description.  They’re dark, gritty, and raw, which means listening with an open mind and appreciating the vision in their unusual musicality. It makes sense, then, that my first live experience with the band is taking place on a rainy and dramatic June evening in Fresno, California at Audie’s Olympic in the historic Tower District. On their first visit to Fresno, the Los Angeles-based group is in the midst of their By Any Means Necessary tour, and they plan to spend the next several months touring the West...
